Is it weird to say sometimes I just write to document and not to anyone?

Nah, not at all. If we’re living on such a tough planet might as well chronicle the experience, verdad?

I wish I had a writer friend who could help me review my essays! Unless you've put in hundreds or thousands of hours of practice, you're blind to the writing sins you're committing.

We can try, I am also actually starting out now. I would be great to have another perspective and constructive criticism to improve the writing skills.

Would you happen to know of Writers' Hour? It's an LWS subscription; it's mostly useful for accountability, and they record their goal-setting workshops, but every once in a while, you get to speak about what you write (even mingle with a group mid-week for a short bit of time). I feel like what speaking does is help you organize your frame of mind and gather new ideas. Sometimes these minglings can be very fruitful

This is so helpful! When I was in school and writing all the time this came naturally. Coming back to it more than 10+ years later - this is a good reminder of why some of my writing wasn't flowing the way I wanted it to.

I'm always on a lookout for pieces of information on how to write beautiful and impactful essays and this piece just got added to one of my favourite collections. What I've found while writing essays is that its possible and happens quite frequently that you lose your way or get carried away while trying to convey the emotions and messages. The tips you've shared to hold on to the structure of the essays and maintain coherence throughout are absolutely mind-blowing.

Honestly, I've been wanting to convey a personal essay of mine since months now. These were exactly the problems I was facing. I couldn't use Chat GPT as it just turns my entire narrative very robotic or show my friends because the it felt too vulnerable. So, thanks

This was so helpful - I feel like I’ve really found my voice with the personal essay format and I am really enjoying discovering other perspectives on it. I write personal essays and experimental short fiction, and I’m slowly gathering the readers who like that kind of thing. If that’s you, I’d love to share my Substack with you. No expectation — just an invitation.

Appreciate that they admit 'show don't tell' doesn't mean never tell, because some emotions don't need elaborate body language to land.
